Extremely Disappointing
This is an extremely disappointing record, featuring tons of filler and four good songs: "Best Damn Fool", "Out In The Woods", "I Found Happiness", and the wonderful "Lyin' Like A Dog". The rest of the album is plagued by Eric Clapton turning in tons of cheezy lyrics and vocal lines, Susan Tedeschi adding a definite pop element to the disc, a duet with Buddy and young Quinn which amounts to nothing more than rattling off a list of Blues legends, and a 1980s-style power ballad called "Skin Deep". Buddy Guy is seventy-two years old and we don't know how much longer he'll be with us. His record company is obviously clueless as to what to do with him, and if, as Buddy alleges, he had a strong hand in producing this album and writing its material, he needs to stop writing for Blues-Rock audiences and start writing for Blues audiences. I've made numerous comments on numerous people's reviews for this album, and nobody has made any sense at all in their rebuttals. I am not harping on the fact that this album is a disappointment because I dislike Buddy Guy or think that all reviewers are retarded; I am wondering why, after two-plus years of promises from the great Buddy Guy, we're left with less than half a record. One would think that Marshall Chess produced this mess.

Plangent chords possessed by the ghosts of John Lee Hooker
You want some strong blues by the best players around, this is your CD. Guy plays some funky hard guitar here and he's got Robert Randolph (who some say is the next Jimi Hendrix) and Eric Clapton right up there playing with him. And if you want some serious gritty female vocals, there's always Susan Tedeschi.

I usually mention a couple of favorites. So far, "Out in the Woods" is the song that's gotten the most repeats. Think New Orleans bayou on a full moon night with the loup garous howling. This is one where Randolph plays, and the guitars are just howling.

"Best Damn Fool," which is the CD opener, epitomizes the blues sentiment.

Guy and Tedeschi were intended to sing together. Just listen to the two of them on "Too Many Tears."

I have a feeling this one's not going to get out of my CD player for a long time. My prediction is "Skin Deep" is going to be one of the best albums of 2008.

I'M LOVIN' IT!
Ordered this album off amazon a few weeks ago and now I have it ,I'm playin' it to death.Bought "Damn Right,I've Got The Blues"a few years ago and I thought that was a very good album. He has a couple of heavy hitters[ Clapton and Randolph] on Skin Deep but I think he keeps it real. It's a Buddy Guy record and his style just oozes off it.I am hoping to run into him at his blues club Legends in a couple of weeks.

The One and Only!!!
God Bless Buddy Guy...he's one in a million. Approaching 72 years young and on fire. As one reviewer noted, he walked on stage in Shine A Light and had the Stones in awe...amazing performance there and it carried over to Skin Deep. Brilliant showman, strong voice, amazing guitar...and along the way still humble to his roots...Buddy, may you live to 100 and kick a** all the way there.
