digitally cold
It sounds as though it was recorded on Mars and then piped in. I believe the performances are fine but the recording is so compressed, so clean it sounds bloodless and a bit lifeless. Too bad. Stick with the Carnegie Hall recording with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Reba Mcintyre(?) or the original with Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. Thanks

Almost as good as the live performance
This is a fantastic production, and the recording really captures a lot of what happens onstage. There is something about a live performance that brings out a little more emotion, though, and I cannot recommend enough that you try to see this show live with Paulo Szot in it before he leaves the cast. When he sang "This Nearly Was Mine" it literally stopped the show and brought everyone to tears. The recorded version is great, but only makes me cry 1/3 of the time. :) The ensemble songs are great fun, especially "Nothin' Like a Dame" and "Bloody Mary."

South Pacific Shines
Kelli O'Hara, Paulo Szot and Danny Burstein really shine in this production of South Pacific. I purchased the recording in hopes of being transported back to the production I was fortunate enough to see. First, if you can get tickets, go. You will not be disappointed.

On the recording, there is a bit more restraint than the stage production. The intonations are more subtle so good listen conditions are helpful to really appreciate the performance. Paulo is flawless but it's Kelli who will win your heart. Kelli's rendering of the songs is beautiful. She conveys a youthful innocence on some, others an exuberance of a young girl in love. I loved her performance. Danny Burstein's "There is Nothing Like a Dame" was amazing on stage and while the CD is extremely good, it was a little disappointing on the recording.

Does it succeed in transporting me back? I suppose most moments in time can't be relived. Still, I would purchase the CD again. This performance of South Pacific made me a Kelli O'Hara fan. It may well make you a convert too.

Brilliant creation of perhaps the best score ever
Just buy this cd and let it take you away to the timeless beauty of this stunning music, supported by a full orchestra. It is filled with song after song of masterpieces, from the fun of "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair" and "Honey Bun" to the thoughtful "You've got to be carefully taught" to the simply gorgeous "Some enchanted evening" and "Younger than springtime" -- it's priceless.

This production, which gives enough dialogue to fill out some of the essentials of the story, will make you smile and perhaps, as it did me, cry. The voices are perfect; the orchestra is fantastic; the music and lyrics of Rodgers and Hammerstein just shine. They took great pains to do justice to this fantastic music. The voices transport you to another time.
The cast also brings new depths to the story and the music. It is set in a time of war and is imbedded with racial and cultural tensions. Rodgers and Hammerstein were way ahead of their time on the race issue. "You've got to be taught" is a statement.
Loretta Able Sayre brings new depth to the role of Bloody Mary, the Tonkinese woman who wanted to secure her and her daughter's future by enticing Lt. Cable to marry Liat.
Actually, all the leads have voices of angels. Close your eyes and listen.
BUY AND ENJOY! You will get your money's worth in one week.
