Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (The New Broadway Cast)

I heard the original sound track thousands of times as a young naval officer in the South Pacific and fell in love with it. So, when the revival came to Broadway I bought tickets well before the opening, hoping for a good review. The reviews were great and so was my enjoyment of the show (go if you can!). Lowpoints were probably Bloody Mary (not enough oomph to her singining) and LT Cable whose singing seemed a bit weak, although that matches his character. Otherwise, the cast was great. Another reviewer mentioned that the CD seemed less inspired than the stage presentation, but that may be true in general--it's true that there isn't anything the same as being there. Better than the original? I don't want to get in to that discussion--I never saw the original, but the CD of the revival is certainly as good as the recording of the original.

We are looking forward to seeing this revival on Broardway in September
Listening to the CD the Cast doesn't sound as strong as the previous two productions mainly in the lead roles
I might be proven wrong, I belive the show has recieved 7 Tony awards out of 11 nominations
In the past once we have seen a show, the result has been an enhanced appreciation for it

South Pacific is widely considered one of the all-time greatest musicals, and yet, somewhat inexplicably, it had never received, until now, the revival it deserved. Add the fact that recording technology has vastly improved since the original cast was recorded in 1949, and this CD is a must-have in any Broadway musical collection, indeed, any music library. This show well deserved it's Tony as Best Musical Revival. I couldn't help but wonder if the show that won Best New Musical, "In the Heights", would, like South Pacific, be re-vivable 60 years after it's original production.

You can't beat Rodgers and Hammerstein! Each song is a treasure. The melodies and lyrics are so touching and this cast does a great job bringing them to life again. Thank you.

Just saw this production at Lincoln Center and this recording captures and recreates what I saw perfectly. This revival of South Pacific is wonderful. See it while the original revival cast is still together - they are a phenomenal ensemble.
